Since corn is often genetically modified, always buy a stevia product that’s either organic or non-GMO. Maltodextrin is not calorie-free however per serving, carbohydrates are less than 1 gram so producers are allowed to label product as zero-carb, calorie-free, etc.

Dextrose - a filler made from corn sugar, fruits or honey, it is closer to sugar than other fillers on the market. It’s very low in carbohydrates and calories so it’s allowed to be labeled as calorie-free. Like maltodextrin, it has a very sweet taste but is actually closer to sugar in its chemical form than maltodextrin.  I would suggest avoiding any products with dextrose if you follow a strict sugar-free diet. Again, if you do purchase products with dextrose, always choose brands that are certified non-GMO since corn is often genetically modified.

Inulin - one of the safest additives is a vegetable, prebiotic fiber known as inulin. However, don’t let the vegetable part fool you into thinking it’s necessarily healthy for you. Though it’s a good source of fiber, it doesn’t resemble broccoli or kale no matter how vegetable-based it is. Inulin has also been linked to gastrointestinal disorders such as bloating, gas, and general digestive upset.

Erythritol -

a sugar alcohol made from corn that generally tolerated wells, however since it is corn-based, you should try to buy GMO free brands when possible. Erithrytol is very low in calories and provides a sweet taste many people prefer to other additives. It’s  used in the brand Truvia, owned by Coca Cola among others on the market. This sugar alcohol has also been linked to digestive upset like most other sugar alcohols, so again, if you suffer from general digestive issues, this one might be best to avoid.

Xylitol - 

a sugar alcohol made from birch trees, this additive is one of the safest out there. It’s proven to be beneficial for oral health though like other sugar alcohols, it can cause digestive upset.

Glycerin-

The safest of all additives, in my opinion, glycerin is a liquid often found in alcohol-free liquid stevia products. It is derived from fruits and vegetables and does not raise the glycemic index. It also has a rounded, sweet taste to produce an optimal-tasting product. Glycerin doesn’t seem to cause issues in most people and is also used in alcohol-free forms of vanilla extract for the same purpose.

If you want to purchase stevia and want the purest product possible, always buy a powdered product that is 100 percent pure stevia extract (not stevia powder, which indicates it is a blend and not pure extract.)  It isn’t cheap to say the least, and it is hard to find in stores. However, it does taste the best and is the cleanest option possible. Another good choice is to choose pure liquid stevia and choose alcohol-free versions if possible. This will ensure the product won’t cause any glycemic or digestive issues or trigger any possible reactions. And of course, if you have a green thumb, you can always grow your own stevia.

However, despite the success in Argentina and Chile, Coca-Cola Life, which has two-thirds the calories in regular Coke, could fail to make an impact in the U.S. This is primarily due to the bitter aftertastes associated with stevia-sweetened drinks. Coca-Cola has a five-year supply agreement with PureCircle for the development of sugar variants and other ingredients. Bitter aftertastes has been the main criticism associated with stevia derivatives, especially Reb A that is used in most stevia-fueled drinks. According to PureCircle, Reb M bears a taste more similar to table sugar than any other stevia product, and can be used to substitute sugar in high calorie foods and beverages without much alteration in taste. Although consumers seem to have rejected stevia in the water brand Vitaminwater, stevia and in particular Reb M might not significantly alter the taste of the cola based fizzy drink Coca-Cola Life.

Stevia cultivation in India:  Since our involvement with stevia, we have seen that many   changes are taking place in Stevia Industry in India.

We have seen all three phases in the stevia cultivation in India like introductory stage, expansion stage, shrinking stage, stagnant stage and again growth stage. Today it is growing slowly and slowly.

Introductory stage:- 

The people started o involve in the stevia crop blindly. No one was aware that what were they doing? They blindly cultivated the stevia crop. The buyers of herbs also show the interest in the crop. They blindly purchased and stocked the crops. Everyone was positive toward the stevia crop. Govt introduced stevia as a medicinal crop.

Expansion stage: -

 The people who were involved in the stevia crop started to find the scope of the stevia , some tried it in the export market, some introduced it in the domestic market. Some introduced it in the international market. Meanwhile the Chinese market of stevia started to boom. They also started to cultivate the stevia. The Indian stevia started make a presence in the international market . The international buyer turned toward India for the supply of the stevia.

Shrinking Stage: -

There was a gap between the supply and the demand. The processing industry didn’t develop in India. Because processing technology was not present in the India at that time. Slowly and slowly the buyer started to make the distance from the stevia crop, this task also leaded to the farmers  to make distance from the stevia.

The growers invested money but when they didn’t find any buyer they started demoralised. A lot of area of stevia crop was uprooted the stevia crop. Because the middlemen was buyer for the producer and he was producer for the buyer. The buyer was not aware of the producer of the stevia crop, The producer was not aware about the buyer. The stevia industry was on the road.

Stagnant stage: - 

People started to rebuild the stevia industry. The product ranges were launched on the stevia products. Small player introduced stevia products at their level at small scale in small area. But the products were based on the chinies imported stevia products.. Some tried to stevia as packed leaves. Some introduced the stevia tablets. Some introduced it as stevia liquid. Some as a dietary food supplement. There was no any guideline on the stevia crop and stevia product from govt. The last blast from govt shide toward the stevia shrinking was ban on stevia sweetener products in India. The order was issued by the FSSAI without putting any genuine reason. Everyone was demoralised, the grower, the buyer and the seller. The industry was stopped where it was.....

Growth stage:-

One thing was clear that the ban was not on the stevia cultivation. Meanwhile the international buyers were continue in showing interest in Indian stevia. The European Union recommended stevai as sweetener. The USA also recommended the stevia as a sweetener. The European demand increases and it is still increasing. The export of the stevia boosted. The Indian stevia made a clear position in the international market..

Some stevioside extraction technologies were also introduced. We also came in contact with some technology provider for the stevioside extraction. Two three stevia plants of stevioside extraction has been established in the India. Whatever information I am having One in located in west Bengal, second one is in Himachal, third is Maharashtra.

The Govt institute has started to work on stevia. Some big brand like Pepsi, Coke, Cargill has alos associated with Stevia. Today the stevia industry is growing. A small sroup people also grouped in India for the stevia industry development in India.  Export demand is also increasing. The domestic consumption has also increased.

People have become aware of the stevia, stevia products, stevia crop.

Stevia Cultivation In India

Stevia cultivation in India is a new. The plantation started 6-7 years before.  We went through an article on medicinal plant. The article highlighted the benefit of the stevia. We stuck with crop and try to find out the information on stevia cultivation. Before 5-6 years the content on stevia was not available so much in context to India.  We got some seed from one importer of the stevia seed from Brazil. We started the cultivation the results were as per the expectations. We approached some farmers for the stevia cultivation. Initially it was very hard to make them to cultivate stevia.  We could able to fill the confidence in two three growers for the stevia cultivation. Those 2-3 growers were agree to cultivate the Stevia. They were happy to see the crop in the field. Since the crop was new so there was no one to assist us on the problems in the stevia cultivation. We harvested the crop. It was very tough for us to find the buyer. We got some contact and sold out the stevia. The selling part was very tough. No one knew, to should we sell it.

The problem is still with the farmers that to whom they should sell their produce. The market is not open as the general agriculture commodity. The demand is there in the market but no one knows where it is??

Slowly and slowly we involved more farmers we became confident toward the cultivation side.  We could able to understand the package of practices of the stevia crop in the Indian conditions. We clearly made a small cultivation guideline on the stevia crop. Mean while we came in contact with some other person who were involved in the stevia cultivation. The govt also started to assist the stevia crop under medicinal crop plantation.
